About

The story behind Theo’s Place

Theo’s Place was inspired by Dear Theo, the heartfelt letters of Vincent van Gogh to his brother Theo. In those letters, Theo is remembered as someone who offered Vincent an unconditional space to be heard, supported, and nourished. That idea deeply shaped the heart of this practice. Theo’s Place was created to reflect the same kind of environment, a calm, accepting, and compassionate space where people can feel safe enough to speak honestly and begin to heal, because everyone deserves a Theo in their life.

About me

Arlene Salil

Hi! My name is Arlene Salil, Counselling Psychologist with a deep interest in counseling and emotional support. My interest in this field comes not only from academic training, but also from personal experience. Growing up, I faced many difficulties and often found that the psychological spaces available to me did not feel fully supportive or understanding. Over time, this shaped a strong belief in the importance of creating a space where people feel genuinely heard, respected, and emotionally held.

That belief is what led me toward counseling. I wanted to build the kind of space I once needed, a space where people can come as they are, without fear of judgment, and feel supported in their own journey.

My path here has included a Master’s in Psychology, along with additional coursework in Transactional Analysis and counselling. Alongside my academic training, I have worked as a clinical trainee and as a volunteer on a distress helpline. Those experiences, as much as anything I studied, are what taught me how to sit with someone who is struggling.

How I work

My approach

At Theo’s Place, my approach is warm, empathetic, and client centered. I aim to explore each individual as they are and understand their unique experiences, strengths, and concerns. Based on the person’s specific issues, I tailor counseling strategies in a way that feels personal, respectful, and relevant to their needs. I believe that counseling works best when it is not one size fits all, but instead responds to each person in a thoughtful and individualized manner.
